Council launches new drug addiction project
An innovative scheme to support drug users in overcoming their addictions is being launched by Hertfordshire County Council during National Tackling Drugs Week, which runs from 19 May to 23 May.
The project, ‘Changing Lanes’, is led by the council's Crime & Drugs Strategy Unit, and aims to help class A drug users gain skills by providing a variety of education and training programmes.
Those in community drug rehabilitation and the Drug Interventions Programme, after a qualifying period, will be invited to take part in bite-sized courses in various subjects such as CV skills, computing and food hygiene, to help them get through their treatment and beyond.
It is hoped that the skills they gain will support them in their rehabilitation and help them find employment or move onto more formal training.
Councillor Richard Smith (pictured), executive member for community safety, explained: “It is common for people to lose their way in the middle of their treatment and revert to old habits. Hopefully the prospect of doing something a bit different and gaining qualifications at the same time will encourage people to persevere.
"This will not only help keep them in treatment for longer, but give them skills and improve their self-esteem. It should stand them in good stead during what can be a daunting time after they have completed their programme," Cllr Smith added.
