Abbots Langley club boxing clever

An Abbots Langley-based amateur boxing club that was set up with the help of a Hertfordshire Police grant of £2000 back in June 2009, is thriving, according to reports.

The Herts Police charity, Herts in Trust, helped Watford and District YMCA set up a boxing club, complete with a full size boxing ring, punch bags, and speed ball.

Members are put through their paces by a fully trained instructor at the hourly sessions on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights. It means children have got somewhere to go, can make friends, keep fit and learn a new skill.

Jess O’Gorman, manager of the YMCA Charters Health Club based at the Woodlands Centre, said: “If it wasn’t for Herts in Trust, the boxing club wouldn’t have been able to get off the ground. It has had such a positive impact on the local area and the local youngsters love it. Boxing is a great way for them to release their energy and it is a discipline that helps with concentration and fitness levels.”

The club has also discovered some local talent, with one member soon to be competing in a bout.

Will Stone, 14, said: “The boxing club has really helped with my confidence and given me extra skills - it’s the best sport. I’ve always wanted to try a boxing because it is so different to other sports – and it’s so great this club is local.”

Herts in Trust was launched in 2003 and is also the official charity of Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. It supports community groups or voluntary bodies which are running projects that are trying to improve the lives of young people, reduce crime and the fear of crime, or highlights awareness around accidental fires.
