Dacorum's street clean up blitz

Posted by news desk in Local News, 17th May 2008, 12:44pm

An early morning blitz on graffiti, litter and unlicensed vehicles has hit part of Dacorum.

The recent environmental clean-up, called Operation Safe and Clean, aimed to make the Bennetts End and Corner Hall areas cleaner as well as help cut the fear of crime for local residents.

The multi-agency teams from the Dacorum Community Safety Partnership were co-ordinated by the Council's Public Protection service and included Hertfordshire Constabulary and Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, alongside the Council's Anti-Social Behaviour, Environmental Health, Planning Enforcement, Landscape, Streetcare and Housing teams.

The exercise had a slightly different approach to operations last year, with a later start time increasing visibility to local residents. There was also additional Dacorum Borough Council services involved - the Planning Enforcement team looked for unsightly privately-owned homes and breaches to planning laws, while Housing looked for problems such as broken gas meters and potential fire risks around Council-owned properties.

Councillor Colette Wyatt-Lowe, portfolio holder for community services and public protection, said: "We're constantly developing initiatives to make Dacorum a cleaner and safer place for people to live and work. One way of tackling problems, such as abandoned cars and litter, is to carry out operations like this, to not only keep our neighbourhoods tidy, but to offer reassurance to residents."

The operation resulted in 153 incidents recorded, including:

- Three vehicles without road tax were removed through powers handed down from DVLA and a further seven were served notice under the Clean Neighbourhood and Environment Act.

- 32 notices were served on vehicles parked illegally, including on grass verges.

- 19 incidents of graffiti, which will all be removed within the next ten days.

- 17 breeches of tenancy were identified (for example, overgrown/neglected gardens), with tenants to be contacted in due course.

- Six tonnes of dropped litter, fly tipping and rubbish from garage clearances were collected by Dacorum Borough Council's Streetcare team.

- 30 reports of broken kerbs or damaged pavements, which the Herts Highways Agency will be notified of.

- One stray dog was picked up.
