Reading challenge for kids in Herts
Go for Gold is the challenge for all children across Herts – with ‘Team Read’, the UK’s biggest annual promotion of children’s reading.
‘Team Read’ is the tenth summer reading challenge for children and young people, organised by Hertfordshire Libraries this year as part of the National Year of Reading. As in previous years, the challenge is for children to read six books over the summer break, and this year the theme is getting active.
Each child taking part in the challenge will receive a Team Read pack and an amazing ‘moving image’ membership card. Every two library books that a child reads as part of ‘Team Read’ will be rewarded with special sticker sheets as they read through bronze and silver medal stages to go on to their gold medal.
Children who complete the challenge by reading six books and talking to library staff about them, will be rewarded with a medal and certificate, presented at a special ceremony.
Councillor Keith Emsall, executive member for community information and culture, said: "Team Read is a reading challenge but it’s not a competition to see who can read the most books over the summer holiday – it’s about encouraging children to explore their public library and get the reading habit for life.
“This year the theme is about getting active, and we very much hope that the children will get into the sporting spirit as they work towards their gold medals,” continued Cllr Emsall.
A dedicated summer reading challenge website will offer children a great range of games and activities to complement the challenge, and a chance to ‘meet’ some of their favourite authors.
The summer reading challenge has proved to be hugely popular. Last year more than 14,000 children took part in Hertfordshire, and this year’s challenge promises to be the biggest yet.
‘Team Read’ folders will be available in all Hertfordshire’s public libraries, including mobile libraries until Friday 5 September, but children don’t have to wait for the challenge to start to join the library.
