Post Office closures - no U-turn yet
Just two of Hertfordshire’s 38 post offices marked for closure have been reprieved.
The Post Office is now considering the closure of two extra post offices in the north of the county as well as Moatfield post office in the south, announced last week.
County councillor Richard Roberts, executive member for corporate strategies and partnerships, said: “We are glad that Whitwell and Bengeo post offices have been saved," said “but we are shocked to hear that Cottered post office and Walsworth post office in Hitchin are now at risk.
“This is a real blow to people in Hertfordshire, especially as the Post Office previously announced proposals to close Moatfield post office in the south of the county. It’s disappointing that, despite very strong campaigns by local people, the Post Office has gone ahead with closures and added even more to the list.
“The county council is seeking to resume earlier talks with the Post Office as a matter of urgency, to see whether we can make some post office services available from council buildings. It’s certainly worth exploring what can be done.
“We are concerned about the effects of closures on local people and we want to find some practical ways to help. We hope the Post Office will co-operate with that.”
